Path of Exile Item Upgrading

Components
Upgrade components make your weapons and armour better. You can find them through destroying enemies, buying them from karma vendors or finding them in items-spheres. You can also salvage them from equipment that has the components or through high-end salvage kits like Black Lion Salvage Kit and Ascended Salvage Tool. Upgrade components aren't destroyed by removing them from an item.
Upgrade components are mostly used to upgrade an item, however, they can also be used for other reasons. They can be stacked to increase the level or the amount of experience gained by upgrading weapons or gear. They can also be made to provide extra bonuses. For example, a crafted glyph will boost the chances of upgrading its target, while a boost upgrade will increase the attack or defense property of a weapon, or armor.
You can attach an upgrade template to an item by selecting it from the edition GUI. This will show the upgrade components that the item can be updated. You can also use the workbench for selecting an upgrade template. In either case, the item will be upgraded when enough upgrade components are collected.
Each component has its own experience multiplier, which determines how much more experience an item receives when it is upgraded with that component. For instance, organic components offer an experience multiplier that is higher than mechanical ones. It is therefore recommended to upgrade with organic components until you have reached the experience multiplier of the next rank of equipment or weapon, and then switch to mechanical upgrades.
Each item comes with an upgrade limit number that can be received. The number of upgradeable items is determined by their upgradeable rank and the kind of upgrade they can get. For instance, the most expensive possible upgrade for a weapon is a weapon with tier 10. However, the most common upgrades for weapons are the tier 6 weapon and an armor upgrade of tier 5.
Sets
A set is a collection of items that share a bonus. Each item in the set can be upgraded at least once and each upgrade boosts the amount of bonuses that are guaranteed. When you first upgrade an item, its primary stat will be +1.
